-The Devil came to steal, kill and destroy; he is the father of lies; he wants you to spend eternity in hell with him.

God’s Best

    + Jesus never turned and ran from the Devil.  Whenever there was a fight to be had with the Devil, Jesus stood His ground.  Scripture tells us that Jesus is our High Priest and that He has been tempted just like we are tempted; but that unlike us- Jesus successfully passed every temptation of the Devil. 

     Why is it important that our Savior is perfect? __________

- Jesus knew the Devil was not done with Him; but neither was Jesus finished with the Devil.  This is why Jesus went to the Devil after He had paid for our sins and declared His victory over the Devil (1 Peter 3:18-20close1 Peter 3:18-20 18 For Christ also suffered once for sins, the righteous for the unrighteous, that he might bring us to God, being put to death in the flesh but made alive in the spirit, 19 in which he went and proclaimed to the spirits in prison, 20 because they formerly did not obey, when God's patience waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was being prepared, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were brought safely through water.             -Jesus shows He is Messiah by going without food & not being hungry for 40 days

                        -It is when He is done with His 40 days of focusing on God through fasting that He is hungry

                        -In the new creation we will have perpetual communion w God; we will never be hungry / thirsty

 

            -Of course, the whole Fall into Sin, was because Adam did not focus on God’s word instead of food

             -Jesus begins His ministry by going back to the very nature of the first sin & demonstrating His Divinity

 

     -Of course the 40 days in the dessert reminds us of Israel’s 40 years in the wilderness

            -The Prophet Elijah also went without food for 40 days (1 Kings 19:8close1 Kings 19:8 8 And he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mount of God.      -Luther said in “The Bondage of the Will” that God has provided a way to nourish us without bread (His Word).

            -The devil is not God, the devil is not omnipresent; he can only be in one place at a time

                        -Logically speaking, the most important place for him to be during Jesus’ time on earth, was @ His heel

 

            -If the devil would try to destroy the relationship of trust between Jesus and the Father (“If you are the Son of God…”); then don’t doubt for a second that the devil would not try to destroy every single important relationship in your life.

                        -In Christ’s time there was more than one town named Bethlehem

                                    -Bethlehem means “house of bread”

                                    -The town Jesus was born in was Bethlehem Ephrathah   “Ephrathah” means “fruitful”

                                           -There is fruit which comes from the bread of life

                                                -These fruit are: faith, forgiveness, new life, reconciliation, indwelling of the Holy Spirit

                        -Jesus who is the word made flesh; is also the bread of life & His bread produces fruit.

                                    -Jesus has need for nothing; the devil has nothing to give Jesus

                        -But Ruth did not experience fruitfulness in the normal way; through her husband

                                    -Ruth’s fruitfulness was God’s conversion of her heart

                                                -Her fruitfulness was evident to her mother in law

 

            -The first thing the devil tempts Jesus in is to not trust the spoken word of His Father (“This is my beloved Son”)

                        -This was the first temptation which the devil put to Adam & Eve also

Jesus Ministers to Great Crowds 23 And he went throughout all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues and proclaiming the gospel of the kingdom and healing every disease and every affliction among the people. 24 So his fame spread throughout all Syria, and they brought him all the sick, those afflicted with various diseases and pains, those oppressed by demons, epileptics, and paralytics, and he healed them. 25 And great crowds followed him from Galilee and the Decapolis, and from Jerusalem and Judea, and from beyond the Jordan.      -It may seem that the way of compromise leads to a better place; but this is only an illusion

            Even as this moment lasted only an instant; so also does any “benefit” which the devil offers

                        The devil comes to kill, steal & destroy; he is the father of lies; his path is destruction

            Both God and the Devil offer leadership; but their leadership points in opposite directions

 

     -The Greek word for “led” is found 23 times in Scripture; only 6 of which are not in the book of Acts

            Interesting to reflect on how being a Disciple of Christ, means being led by Him

 

     -Part of the idea behind “showed” in the Greek is to teach one what they should do (Thayer’s Lexicon)

            The devil was trying to teach Jesus something
