Tell her then to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” 41 But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” (ESV) , Jesus sends the 72). Part of Jesus' instructions to both sets of disciples was to be aware that there would be men of peace who would be instrumental in the evangelistic efforts of the disciples.
Are there men of peace that God would use today to help us with our outreach efforts? There is nothing in Scripture that indicates otherwise; that is to say, no where in the Bible does it say that men of peace would only be available from God during the initial planting of the Church.
Why did Jesus have men of peace in place in advance of the disciples? Is there any relevance to penetrating a community today with the Gospel in this regard?
Scripture tells us that God prepares good works in advance for us to do; this certainly includes preparing the people and other things necessary for the Gospel proclamation. The Holy Spirit is at work, long before we show up and each worker has a different role- "one sows and another reaps".
Part of Jesus' directions to the disciples was His desire for the disciples and us today, to see that we should not rely on our gold or silver, but rather, to look expectantly into the places we are called to do ministry and even from the very people we are called to share the Gospel with, to provide the gold, silver, food and lodging necessary for ministry. This is not "corporate church"; this is faith walking.
So, back to the assigned issue in the title- "Identifying Men and Women of Peace Today".
What criteria can we see in the men of peace from the Gospels and New Testament accounts- men and women like Cornelius or Nympha?
I often organize my thoughts, choosing words that begin with the same letter. Today's thought is brought to you by the letter "r".
Receptive- a man of peace is receptive to the Gospel proclamation
Reputation- they will have a good reputation in their community; Cornelius had significant influence. The house church hosts of Paul's ministry often were community leaders.
Referrals- they will introduce you and make a way for your ministry in their circles
Resources- they will feed you, house you, provide the gold and silver needed for ministry.
Why are Men and Women of Peace needed today?
I believe Men and Women of Peace are especially critical if a local church wants to reach into a community of people who have a different language/culture (two different things) than the primary language/culture of the congregation. These people whom the Holy Spirit has already arranged to be available and willing, can rapidly expedite the formation of fellowship and worshipping communities, if the Pastor and House Church Planter have a vision for this.
This is our strategy in Newark, NJ. As we are reaching out this Summer through Prayer Walking, our outreach teams are looking for Men and Women of Peace; and I am following up with these selected people to see what doors God is opening into this community for forming new worshipping communities.
The first mission team to come here, identified about a dozen possible men and women of peace and this was after about 8 hours of Prayer Walking.
