Rewards 40 “Whoever receives you receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who sent me. 41 The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward, and the one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person's reward. 42 And whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.” (ESV) , Jesus gave them the instructions to look for people of peace (literally "sons of peace"). These people of peace would be instrumental in the success of the disciple's mission work.
When we think of a harvest that is ready (Matthew 9:37closeMatthew 9:37 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; (ESV) closeMatthew 9:37closeMatthew 9:37 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; (ESV) 37 Then he said to his disciples, “The harvest is plentiful, but the laborers are few; (ESV) ), many times we think simply of the work of going and bringing to Harvest in. This work needs to be done to be sure. But the image of a harvest that is ready is richer than simply the idea of going and gathering the sheaves.
A harvest that is ready includes people and resources that are waiting for the disciple of today. Jesus did not need the five loaves and two fishes (Matthew 14:17closeMatthew 14:17 17 They said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.” (ESV) closeMatthew 14:17closeMatthew 14:17 17 They said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.” (ESV) 17 They said to him, “We have only five loaves here and two fish.” (ESV) ). His instructions to gather what was available from the crowd was one way in which He personally modeled looking into the harvest fields themselves for the resources needed to do the mission.
When our short term mission teams were here this summer they were instructed and trained in how to look for people of peace as they went Prayer walking. Through this outreach we made contact with the leadership of the public middle school directly across the street from Redeemer Lutheran church in Newark, NJ.
One of our mission team members in their conversation with school staff let them know that we would be having Vacation Bible School (VBS) for the children in the community and that it would start every day when their summer school let out. The mission team member informed the vice principal that we would like to invite the children in the school to come to the VBS when they were done with school. The principle not only agreed but invited us to come into the cafeteria and hand out flyers to the children and parents.
We also asked the principal what we could do to help the school. The principal said they could use help with cleaning the graffiti from the games from their walls. This graffiti is called "tagging". We got together a team and came over and after being instructed in how to mix the solution and clean the walls we cleaned all of the tagging off all of the walls throughout the building and all of the tables in the cafeteria. The school staff was very appreciative of this and I was invited to come and speak to the parent association meeting of the students at that school.
I accepted the invitation and came to talk with the parents. I proposed that we offer an afterschool program for their children and asked the parents and teachers what would be most helpful. I don't always wear a clerical collar, but I did on this occasion- I do think they can be helpful for a Pastor.
The parents and teachers shared with me that the Newark public school system does not have an afterschool program for kindergarten through second grade. This means that Monday through Friday at 2:55 PM a five-year-old in the city of Newark will have to walk herself home down those city blocks all by herself. The next day after the meeting; I watched the school at 2:55pm and sure enough- there were little 5 year old children coming out the doors of the school, all by themselves and walking God only knows how many city blocks by themselves to get home. It is a miracle that there aren't more terrible things happening.
This is wrong and it needs to stop.
By God's grace we are starting an afterschool mentoring program. It is in partnership with the public school. We are tailoring this program to meet the needs of the families in a way that best matches up with what the public school is offering to serve the families. I am sharing all of our plans with the Principal for his advice and review.
It was interesting in our last Parents association meeting- the school staff encouraged me to have Bible teaching for the children. They felt they could see the difference between children who had this at home and those who did not. The parents all agreed. We are the church, we will have Bible teaching for these children in our community.

I have been invited back since that to talk to another group of parents. There are about 180 children in kindergarten through second grade in this public school alone. The principle is so happy to have this resource for the students especially in this current economy that comes with all of the budget cutbacks.
Part of our plan is to invite other LCMS congregations to participate in this afterschool mentoring program. It is our hope that through the experience these other congregations again that they will prayerfully consider ways that they can also partner with the public schools in their community. We understand that every partnership is unique and that no two will look exactly the same.
As you go out into the harvest fields that most certainly are ready just remember that part of gods preparation of good works for you to do included making sure that there would be people and resources in the harvest field itself which will be critical for your success.
