I was blessed in many ways on deployment. I got to see God do amazing things. God blessed me personally also. One of His many blessings to me was the friendship of LtCol Dave Huxsoll.
On his first Sunday at Al Udeid Air Base, LtCol Huxsoll came into the Chapel and before my service began, he asked me if I was taking prayer requests. I replied, "Yes"; he then shared with me that he would like a prayer for his daughter- she was getting confirmed that day, and he would not be able to be there. I told him we would definitely pray for this and I told myself, "Here is a good man; get him involved in the ministry if you can."
LtCol Huxsoll would be a significant part of my ministry. He was instrumental in helping me establish the first ever Liturgical Protestant worship service on the base (one of the five categories for Christian worship in the Air Force). LtCol Huxsoll was the "man behind the electronic organ" as he not only set up the worship service each week, but "played" the hymns from "The Concordia Organist" as recorded on the CD's. LtCol Huxsoll also helped me distribute 3,000 hard bound copies of Luther's Small Catechism to troops and their loved ones and to place 800 copies of the LSB hymnal in many different chapels; he also wrote dozens and dozens of thank you notes to the churches and members who so lovingly sent care packages to me to give to the troops.
But God's blessing doesn't end there. When LtCol Huxsoll came home, he asked his Pastor if I could come and speak at their church and provide a workshop on Prayer Ministry- as a network supported missionary, by God's grace and the network of the church, I am able to raise the support for my missionary work. Pr. Carey Elam (St. Paul Lutheran Church, Montgomery AL) approved and this next Thursday, I will be flying to Montgomery for a Prayer Ministry workshop on Saturday and a Mission Sunday celebration on Sunday.
God is faithful even when we find ourselves on a deployment in the dessert. Amen?
