Rev. Dr. Al Buckman the Chairman for Christian Friends of New Americans has a simple mission mantra- "Draw, Bridge, Build". The Gospel Outreach Food Pantry in Newark fits into this first step of drawing people through a Mercy ministry, to the Gospel. This past year, by God's grace thirty refugees were baptized through Christian Friends of New Americans, this work was featured in several LCMS publications.
When short term mission teams come, they will participate in this model and thanks to all the hard work by St. Paul Lutheran Church in Flemington, NJ and Christ Assembly Lutheran Church in Newark, NJ; the short term mission teams will already have a Gospel Outreach Food Pantry waiting for them to use to connect with souls in the Newark community.
Mercy ministry is always supposed to be done in close proximity to Word and Sacrament ministry; in this case, it is intentionally being further leveraged to help start new worshipping communities among the Spanish speaking people in this part of Newark. Who can you partner with in your community to start new House Churches, Bible studies, youth groups or Women's ministries?
We are gladly accepting hardbound copies of Luther's Small Catechism; which we will use in our evangelistic follow up with these families.
